I wonder if it’s as simple as wanting to motivate Leo and keep him committed. It’s a weird one but also we have no idea if this is something that was promised eg either we’ll sell you (and you get a pay bump) or we’ll give you a pay bump.
I interpret this Trossard deal as meaning that the one we wanted (Rodrygo) was not available. We searched the market but didn't find anyone who was clearly promising, so the club decided to wait. It would be better to give Trossard more money to stay for these two years, so the Belgian doesn't want to leave and we don't get into a deadlock where we have to bring someone who dosen't really fitt because of pressure to sign new left winger. With that, we'll be done for this year, we have 4 players to 2 winger post and next summer we can go for an elite left winger, if available. For example Liverpool did this in the last couple of years. But maybe I'm just being too positive. I'm interested in your opinion on this.
Given the Orn-bomb about Eze, I think it's clear what this was about. Like we tried to sell him, couldn't get a fee that made more sense than letting him run it down, like him as emergency backup but want to play him much less going forward, and reached an agreement to pay him more to play him less and not complain.
I think it's more of a message to young talent in the team, academy, and in the market - perform and exceed expectations for Arsenal and the club will back you. While it uses valuable PSR space, it's an incredibly valuable marketing tool to that very niche audience.
Hearing the news of Kai hurting his knee this morning … maybe having Trossard available on the front line as a more than solid rotational player looks like good business now?
I think trossard is a bit unique in the squad, in that he is a little bit foxy in the boxy, with his 2 footed finishing ability. The raise could also be a little bit of a reward for perhaps dropping down the pecking order with dignity, perhaps with an eye on an exit last summer.
with £200mil+ spent this year, i always felt another addition was unlikely, and the issue we have there aren't many plyers available who would improve the team, they may have the potential, but this summer has been all about now.... Even Mosquera, has 80+ top flight starts under his belt....

Presumably straight dealing with squad members/ honouring promises/ rewarding performance has some signalling benefits.

3m a year is a lot cheaper than the 11-12m amortisation on an Eze fee. Hope the money saved goes on something good.
