Arsenal have dropped 21 points from winning positions, problem or randomness?
Arsenal have turned 10 wins into 9 draws and a loss this season, dropping 21 points. That's not good and deserving of a bit of extra analysis
On Saturday Arsenal dropped their 21st point of the season from a winning position.
This is the 6th most of any teams this season and it is one of the big causes for the current gap from Arsenal to Liverpool at the top of the table and one of the reasons that Arsenal have been dragged back into having some doubt about their position in the top 5, let alone being able to wrap up their third straight second place season.
Arsenal have taken the lead in 28 matches this season and have gone on to win just 18 of those matches.
The 21 points dropped is more than Arsenal had in the 2023/24 and 2022/23 seasons combined, where they dropped just 17 points total from winning positions. In fact over Arteta’s time as a coach this season has been an outlier compared to all the other full seasons.
2024/25: 28 times winning, 21 points dropped
2023/24: 32 times winning, 9 points dropped
2022/23: 30 times winning, 8 points dropped
2021/22: 26 times winning, 11 points dropped
2020/21: 21 times winning, 8 points dropped
Overall, the numbers for Arsenal look decent. On the understat xG (your milage may vary on the xG model and they are different than my numbers but they are easily available here) Arsenal are second to Liverpool in xG difference at a +1 game state this season. They are at +0.9 with Liverpool ahead a fraction at +0.93, and that is better than the third best team Brentford who are at +0.74.

This is actually better than last season where Arsenal were +0.83 in the +1 goal game state and ranked 5th in the Premier League.
In 2022/23 it is more of the same with Arsenal at +0.47 xG difference per 90 at the +1 goal game state, where they ranked 7th in the Premier League.
This is a situation where again, it is hard to say that it looks like there is a systemic issue with Arsenal that needs to be fixed. The xG numbers are solid, maybe a bit too much allowed here for how highly we think about the defensive unit but still a +0.9 number is very good and should not be the type of situation that typically leads to dropping points in 10 matches.
It’s also a bit surprising that given that Arsenal have such good attacking numbers that they have only gone from +1 to +2 13 times this season out of 28 would not be what you would expect.
It’s unfortunate and doesn’t make it feel better but it’s also probably an explanation that 4 of the 10 this season have come in the last 5 played with Arsenal pretty much in the full focus on the Champions League, with two of the early ones coming in matches where Arsenal were down to 10 men against Brighton and Manchester City.
Given that this season looks like an outlier under Arteta I am willing to chalk this up to a sometime weird stuff happens, especially when you start slicing up a season into less than 900 minute chunks.

For whatever weird reason, this season, our goal scoring has been abysmal. What makes it even more frustrating, is that so many teams get one sniff at goal, and score, while we cannot put 4 or 7 chances away at the other end. This has been a very frustrating season. Injuries plagued us. Dodgy refereeing decisions punished us and or profligate goal scoring frustrated us and cost us points. Personally, I do not think Arteta is to blame for this. For my money, we are too complacent in front of goal. We have to have the intention to win, to go through the gears and put teams we dominate to the sword. We just don't do that. That is an Arteta thing, but the rest of it comes down to the players and their execution. Take our performance in front of goal during the last PSG game. Same story. We just have to do better.
Great analysis Scott. Really surprised to see the underlying numbers are better than the last few years even given reds, pens and injuries
