Attacker month has so far spent a lot of time and energy focused on guys Arsenal *do not* have, evaluating options potentially on the market. But one thing we haven’t done an awful lot of is introspection.
Flash forward to this weekend, and I serendipitously got into a number of online back-and-forths about Arsenal’s attackers, specifically as they relate to league-leader Liverpool’s. As is human nature, there’s definitely a prevailing attitude out there that the Reds’ attacking depth is not only better than Arsenal’s, but significantly better. After all, they’re top of the table and have fewer games where they’ve failed to score. So I thought, why not get into that in some more detail?
For your consideration: Let’s talk Arsenal attackers, Liverpool attackers and how they compare, both coming into the season (which affects squad planning) and in this first 22 or so matches. Buckle up!
What history tells us
Much of this discussion ultimately boils down to your answer to a question: How good are Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus? You could probably throw Raheem Sterling in there, too, but he was brought in on deadline day so he’s less material to the topic I’m about to dive into.
Your opinion on these three attackers sets the baseline for what improves the Arsenal attack, and how easy it would have been to acquire that player this past summer. It also feeds your opinions about how Arsenal’s guys are doing this season and whether the club should have known better than to try a campaign with this group.
