Attacker month continues here at Cannon Stats, and it’s time for your first film study of the session, on former Arteta student and current Bayern Munich attacker Leroy Sané.
Sané will turn 29 in January, but has been theoretically linked to Arteta’s project due to his past connection with the coach at Manchester City. He’s also nearly out of contract at Bayern Munich, with whom he signed a five-year deal in 2020.
The left-footed winger is more of a right-sided player in an Arteta system, but frequently plays on the left for Bayern, also spending a good amount of time central. It’s worth noting that, while it’s been a few years, he did feature almost exclusively as a left winger for Manchester City, for whom he started 68 matches over three seasons, a time during which the club won two titles.
Leroy is German-born and came up through the Schalke 04 system, which culminated in an eight-goal, six-assist campaign during his age 19 season in 2015-2016. He also spent time during his youth years at Bayer Leverkusen.
It’s worth noting that Sané has links to a number of Arsenal players, having been teammates at City with Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus, as well as loanee Raheem Sterling, and playing in the German National Team alongside Kai Havertz. He did also play his breakout season with Arsenal legend Sead Kolašinac.
