I am not sure I fully understand they why on this from the Chelsea or player side but this would give Arsenal one of the best options for behind Saka in the League
Love the comparative radar overlays with players we "like" to reveal flaws in our bias. Great post, along with your pod on Eze player evaluation. Cheers
Really good article and does rather show up the bias that many Arsenal fans have against players who are coming from Chelsea for some reason. Personally, I prefer to see it more as showing the status of Arsenal in relation to Chelsea, they are stepping stone club and we are a destination that players want to come to and stay at!
On Madueke, I have always thought he looked like a very talented player whenever I have seen him play for Chelsea and for England. He definitely does not look to contribute as much defensively as we generally want our wingers to but that could easily be something more tactical than indicating that he cannot or will not do it.
As with most transfers, I think it comes down to price. If we are talking £50m+ then I think it is probably not a great deal to do but if we can get him for around £40m I think it probably makes sense.
For reference, I also am not a huge fan of the prospect of signing Eze for the price being talked about (£65m+), as I just think it is too much money for a player that I think is more rotational than starter and could potentially block the midfield progress for some of our youngsters (Ethan and Max).
He has always impressed me when I have seen him. However as you mentioned it seems a lot for a back up even if he can play both sides. This is a luxury im not sure we can afford considering the work needed on this squad. Interesting how he compares to Eze, could you envision him becoming more of cover at 8 for Odegaard? As thats what really excites me about the Eze links as I think we need more creativity in midfield.
It just seems very strange to spend so much money on a player you hope will not play much. Eze, Semenyo and Mbeumo rumours were received much better because they can play multiple positions and there is a clear way for them to play >2000 minutes. With Madueke this only happens if Saka gets injured. Additionally, we already have a good backup in Nwaneri and an emergency option in Martinelli (who is actually quite good on the right), so overall it looks like a total waste of money. Even if every other position was stacked with talent this signing would be unnecessary

Madueke can play left and right and is a truer backup compared to alternatives where you’re moving someone out of position for cover.
